It intermittently cuts out the signal of the audio, sometimes not working for a few hours at a time. consequently it has not been used for a long time due to it’s unreliability. It remains powered on and no other physical side effects occur making me believe that it could be fixed relatively easily if you have a grasp of electronics or know a good service center, and I’m sure somebody out there could restore it back to good working order which is well worth doing. “The Akai Professional MFC42 Analog Filter Module features 1 x stereo and 1 x mono filter channel which can be controlled independently, linked together or inverted. Each channel is selectable between any one of four filter types: Low pass, High pass, Band pass and Notch. The stereo channel features dual 2-pole or 4-pole filters and the mono channel has 2-pole, 4-pole or 8-pole selectable filters (maximum combination: four 2-pole filters total). Both channels have independent input trim and programmable output level controls. The mono channel has an additional Pan control.

The MFC42 offers a modulation section with multi-waveform LFO and ADSR Envelope generator that can be used to modulate the cutoff and/or resonance of either the stereo or mono channel, with a programmable depth control. The LFO can also modulate the L/R phase of the stereo channel.

The speed of the LFO can be controlled via the Rate knob, the Tap Tempo key, and it can be synchronized to external MIDI clock. A manual Trigger button engages the envelope generator which has independent controls for attack, decay, sustain & release. Alternatively the MFC42 can have its envelope triggered via incoming MIDI notes on a specified MIDI channel or cyclically by the LFO clock.

Effects include Distortion with depth control, analog stereo Phase Shifter with speed and depth controls and Master EQ with separate Low & High controls.

Almost all the knobs and keys of the MFC42 send out and receive MIDI Control Change data, recording the movement of each knob/button to an external sequencer for complete automation.

The input/outputs accept mono/stereo line or phono level signals via grounded RCA connections.

“This is my Akai MFC42 Filter module, which I bought and used standalone (IE without an MPC) to filter and process samples.

It comes boxed, with manual on CD-R/DVD. It’s been used lightly in a non-smoking home studio, then stored for a couple of years.

I’ve tested it, and it sounds amazing: real, hardware filtering sounds like no software ever could. You get Mono 2-pole/4-pole/8-pole filtering in mono, and 2-pole or 4-pole filtering in stereo. Either can be set to Low-pass (filter the high-frequencies, leaving the bass), High-pass (filter out the bass, leave the treble), Band-pass (filter either side of the cutoff frequency, leaving a narrow band of frequencies) and notch (filter out a narrow band of frequencies, leaving the bass and treble either side).

What’s great about this unit is the resonance. Software filters aren’t built to scream like this: the hardware will produce huge, howling resonance before you even get to 75% res. What this means is that you can turn even feeble drum loops into booming, throbbing bass loops, or turn a sampled synth into the mightiest acid shriek you’ve ever heard. I found myself having to be very careful with the resonance setting, because it’s a beast. You can modulate cutoff and resonance with an inbuilt LFO, and an envelope, and the unit has MIDI In and Out for control via a sequencer.

It’s also got a crunchy-sounding EQ, distortion and phaser stage. It’s really a unique sound – I had a huge grin on my face while I was testing it, but I can’t justify my hardware habit any longer, so it’s got to go. Also, I don’t want to give the impression that it’s only for making huge, aggressive sounds – go gently on the settings and it’s just a lovely, fat-sounding hardware filter – it’s just got an enormous range, and will go further out there than the filters of any hardware synth I’ve owned (EG Moog Voyager, Roland Juno 106, Novation Bass Station…).” Link

“Ich verkaufe hier mein Analog-Filter-Modul Akai MFC42, da ich mir ein anderes Gerät zugelegt habe und dieses hier nicht mehr benötige. Das Akai MFC42 – Filter Modul ist noch bestens in Schuß und in einem super Zustand. The MPC has 32MB of RAM along with the 8 out option on the back of the console. It does not have any internal effects because I had them removed years ago. I would suggest using external effects anyway because the ones that came installed were garbage and they were slowing my system down. I do not have the effects card though so you will have to pick that up somewhere else if you really need it, but like I said not necessary. I also have the original screws that were on both sides where the bracket for the filter is now. ” Link

“I’ve never owned a ‘proper’ analogue filter before, apart from the one in my dear, departed juno, and I’m really impressed by the way the akai sounds. I’ve had a lot of experience with their digital filters in my mpc, which are useful and fun, but not really that filter-y. This unit on the other had, is the business. For your money, you get a mono filter that is switchable between 2- 4- and 8-pole, and a stereo filter that switches between 2- and 4-pole. Both of them are resonant and both can function as LP, BP, HP or notch. If you engage all 8 poles on the mono filter, the stereo filter is disabled, similarly if you engage 4 poles on the stereo filter, the mono is gone. Sadly, other than running cables out to a mixer and back in again, there’s no way to route the filters serially. I suppose this is because akai designed it to be used with an mpc with multiple outs.

On top of the filters, there is akai’s “groove modulator”, which is a single envelope and lfo. they can’t both be used at the same tim, and they can be routed to cutoff and resonance. the envelope is a standard ADSR, and the lfo has triangle, saw, pulse and S&H. both the envelope trigger and the lfo lock up nice and tight to midi clock (if you want) with 6 note divisions and triplets (for all 6!). Incidently, the envelope and lfo can’t go to both filters at once. on the plus side, with a bit of tweaking the groove modulator does allow for some serious hands-on audio damage.

so, how does it sound? fat and warm – just like a good filter should. the LP is dope, smooth, creamy and if you want, very, very crunchy. HP is crisp, and with a low cutoff, gives you pounds of xtra bass. BP has lots of character, I’d say it’s not so clean, even with the resonance down low, but it does seem to have a fair few sweet spots along the dial. the notch is a little more subtle, but again, with modulation, there’s lots of fun to be had.

surprisingly, for me, the best features of this box, are at the end of the signal chain – not the rather half-arsed distortion tho. the mfc comes with a “phase shifter”, presumably akai-speak for phaser. anyway, whatever you want to call it – it’s flat-out great. i don’t know why it sounds so good, but it seems to ooze character, it’s quite warm, gritty and it pi**es on all my flange/phase vsts from on high. and it’s only got 2 knobs: rate and depth. rounding off the package is a very nice little eq, great for taming the filters a little, and putting some bass back where it’s needed.

if you see one of these – buy it ;o). I can’t compare it with the “greats” like the filterbank or waldorf 4
