Akai MPC 60II with Expanded Memory, OS3.10, Marion SCSI

Thursday Nov 24, 2011

Looks like the seller is including a Compact Flash reader and IDE-to-SCSI bridge adapter.

Link

“Mpc 60 mkii in very good condition but with some noticeable signs of wear – scratches on front panel. but overall good for its age, has not got the usual face rash (rust) most 60′s end up with over the years. Brand new backlight which should last another 20 years ($160) os 2.12 is missing some screws and faceplate on floppy but this is just cosmetic and can be replaced if it bothers you. Output one is cracked but the part is carried at jaycar and is an easy diy job that should only cost about $5 to do. Other then that it’s in good shape as I said aside from some scratches on front panel. 120v so it has to be stepped down. ” Link

“Akai MPC 60 MK II

This is a relist due to a previous bidder dropping out. It’s a classic machine and will be missed but time space and money force the sale. This particular model is the japanese model, however it comes with the correct stepdown transformer and I will also include 30 DD floppy disks. It has the full memory expansion of 1536kb allowing 26.2 secs of sampling time to play with. This doesn’t sound a lot but its plenty! The thing sounds amazing especially when sampling vinyl and the swing is incredible.

The display is very bright, I replaced the foil in it last year and its still as bright as ever now. All the outputs work fine, I’ve been running it through my mixing desk without any problems, the pads are still responsive and the buttons work nicely and have no fading or wear, I’ve been running synths into it with midi so all the midi in’s and outs work perfectly and the headphone output is still working, something the MK 1 doesn’t feature and is a big plus!

As for the condition of the unit, its over 20 years old so it has the usual wear and tear of a vintage piece of equipment. The plastic/metal has discoloured with age giving it more of a beige look. Theres wear and tear on the data knob, as found with most MPC 60′s, there’s also a crack on the plastic covering the display, this doesnt affect operation or hinder the display in anyway, its still perfectly visible. These are the only down points with the MPC but it still works perfect and has been in the centre of my setup for a while now, they really are built to last.” Link

Akai MPC 60II

“AKAI MPC-60 MK II Works perfectly with fairly new backlight.

Here we have the legendry Roger Lynn Akai MPC-60 with its superbly tight sequencer, one of the finest sequencers ever built with rock tight solid house dance sequencing capabilities used by some of the top producers including Stock, Aitken and Waterman. Also used by Teener Turner’s producer who incidentally I met at an exhibition. He was pretty cool.

This example works perfectly and the backlight is relatively new and consequently very bright and clear. This thing sounds marvellous with its onboard sampler and velocity sensitive drum pads all of which work well. The easy tape style transport controls make it easy and fun to use with intuitive locate functions and of course help screens for every screen and menu in the entire system. This has 26 seconds of sample time which is more than ample for drum sampling and one of my favourite features is the button which you hold down while in quantize mode which causes either drums or notes in your sequence to repeat while held down causing great kind of 80s cheesy effects.

The down sides to this are that while cosmetically it is really good in terms of few scratches and nice looking, the print as you can see from the photos is faded quite badly on many of the buttons. Screen printers could sort this out for you if you are really bothered. The other down side which is merely a practical thing rather than sonic is that this is the u.s. voltage version. Don’t let this put you off. There is an appropriate step down transformer to make it work in Europe and UK and sonically there is no compromise. Some theorists reckon the sonic quality is spoiled but we have tested it with both our ears and an oscilloscope and neither show any compromise in the sonic quality and the performance is robust and excellent as you’d expect. There is no mains hum or mains noise at all and the step down in the outer room is not audible easily.” Link

“Akai MPC 60 MK II (os 2.12)

If your reading this listing then I don’t think I need to give it a massive introduction. It’s a fantastic machine and I will be sad to see it leave, The sound of it is amazing and the sequencer is excellent, incredible swing! Limited space and not enough time to use it is forcing the sale. I can see myself buying one in the future when funds allow.

It is an old machine so its not in the greatest of condition, but it functions perfectly. I changed the backlight last year and it is still very bright, It’s running on OS 2.12. There’s a crack across the screen, its only the plastic and not the screen itself so doesnt affect operation at all, its a shame, because otherwise this unit would be in pretty good condition, I’ve tried to bring it up in the photographs but the camera I used wasn’t very good. The pads are responsive and still pretty good. I will include 20-30 DD Floppy disks with it preformatted ready to use with the MPC.” Link
