“Akai S612 sampler. If your are looking at this you probably know more about it that I do. Theres plently of info on this on the net so please have a look at it.
I got this as part of a packaged auction and dont think I will use it. being a guitarist I dont have alot of background in this type of gear. However, I did try to test it – I found that I was able to successfully record a sample via the mic and the line inputs, and I was able to trigger the sample from a keyboard. I was also successful in loading samples off the disks (I have included approximately 20 disks – some of them feature professional samples, some just riff raff from a previous owner) and then trigger and manipulate them. Thats about where the extent of my expertise got me, and to be honest, the results were mixed in terms of sound quality, with somtimes a good sound and sometimes what sounded to me like undesirable artifacts. It may be that the unit is dodgy, or that my operation was flawed, I didnt spend further time and I dont have the experience with this type of gear to know. Nonetheless, because of my doubt I wish to sell this item as is, with no guarantee of its performance. That is, I wont accept returns and ask you to bid accordingly.
The unit is in cosmetically poor condition. It has scratches and some of the knobs are a little bent, and some are not the original knobs. There is a hole in the steel in the back, not sure why. All the knobs change do seem to work.” Link

How often do you get the chance to buy so many QuickDisks at once?

“Wow!
A pair of Akai Quick Disks!
We do not have any of the proper instruments to test these disks.
We cannot determine if they are working properly or not.
They are for auction as-is due to these facts.
Both are in good physical condition with a bit of wear and aging to the labels.
The factory-programmed disk has it’s cardboard cover, the other does not.
The magnetic disk surfaces appear to be fine.
If you own an S612 or S700, you may be in for a real treat!
The factory-programmed disk proudly reads: “Sounds of Japan / Shimedaiko”.
Find that on those crappy plastic samplers you can buy new!
The other user-programmed disk reads “Uranus Horns/ Orch Hit / Flute Flurry”.
Weird!” Link
Opening bid is well worth the value of these rare Quick Disks.
“This thing works great it’s just taking up too much room in my setup these days. Comes with 13 quick disks to record your samples. It’s worth it for the filters alone. But the ability to loop and splice is also quite nice. Alot of producers run samples through this machine then send it to their MPC, ASR or Korg to sequence with. Awesome sound, awesome deal.” Link

“This is a great polyphonic piano sampler. It plays fully across the keyboard with lots of flexibility in sample rates and times; I really enjoy getting lo-fi with it. You can do real-time tweaking of the tune of the sample filter or add to it. Another feature is the real time adjustment of the start/stop time of the sample.
There are 9 sampler disks included,
Disk 1. Side 1:Violins Side 2: Harmonica
Disk 2. Side 1:Male chorus Side 2: Female chorus
Disk 3. Side 1:Girls voice Side 2: Bass Flute
Disk 4. Side 1:Trumpet Side 2: Mallet
Disk 5. Side 1:Strings Side 2: Classical guitar
Disk 6. Side 1:Real Flutes Side 2: Kurzweil Kohler Piano
Disk 7. Side 1:Piano Side 2: Orchestra Bells
Disk 8. Side 1:Cellos Side 2: Strings
Disk 9. Side 1:Mallets Side 2: Synclovuior Bells
The set includes the MD-280 sampler disk drive and the S612 MIDI Sampler.” Link

“hi im selling this akai x7000 sampling keybord with power lead and 5 quick disks, the sampler is in good working order however the disk drive is not working. i have been using it as a controller and sampling and saving the sample vai my software.

“This is an Akai S612 rackmount Midi sampler with a MD280 mini floppy disc drive and 10 discs and manuals for both the sampler and the disc drive. This sampler is pretty basic: It samples at 12 bits, it is controlled by a MIDI keyboard and saves samples to mini floppy discs. It is from 1985 and, I think, has a real analog filter on the output. It is in good condition overall with some scuffs and scratches and one of the control knobs is a bit loose due to part of it’s supporting post being broken. I’ve owned this sampler since way back when and it hasn’t been used in a number of years but I powered it up and it still works, and it reads samples from the disks with no problems.” Link
“Here we have an item which came with some other gear from a studio clearance and is offered as-is because it’s a dedicated unit for the S612 sampler and i am unable to test it.
Vintage piece of gear from the 80′s ideal for a replacement or to rob for spares.
As you can see in the picture it’s in pretty good condition and comes in it’s original box with instruction manual and 6x quick discs.” Link
Looks like it comes with 4 quick disks — easily worth the starting price of the auction.
“you are bidding on n AKAI S-612 digital midi sampler with MD-280-QD disc drive. unit is in nice shape and everything works!! has not seen the outside of my studio from way back. i know its an older unit but someone may have use for it.” Link
The disks alone are worth the starting price.
“his is a no Reserve auction for a vintage akai s612 sampler with md280 disk loader and 12 disks. this is basically a one shot sample module. however one of the great features of this unit is sound on sound recording.. making it function much like a loop pedal that can be reversed in real time. it is a great little experimental sampler.” Link
“After recent ebay sales, I now only have one or two sets left (10 per set) of these to sell, some made by Roland, others by Akai or Maxell, but all QUICK DISKS – not to be confused with normal floppy disks -
QUICK DISKS are quite hard to get hold of as they haven’t been made for a long time – I have no idea what is on any of the disks as I have been collecting them every time any came up for sale and simply storing them because I LOVE my Roland Pr100 sequencer – sadly I am in debt up to my eyeballs and HAVE to let go of most of my prize possessions …
there may be samples on some disks or some simply blank. I haven’t come across any duff disks so I am quite sure they are all perfect apart from some writing on the labels obviously.
The picture is simply of a random set of disks -let me know if you have a preference of manufacturer or if you might be more interested in any that already have samples of any kind on and I will try to put together a set that will be most to your liking – otherwise I will supply blanks and no particular make. I only have one or two boxes so not all sets will be boxed but all will come with the individual covers of course.”
