For those that are unaware the s1100ex unit basically is another sampler but controlled by the main unit, I used to use it for drums and use the extra 10 outputs in the mixing desk so each were eq’d seperately. The combination gave me 20 outputs total

I used to have a professional studio but I am no longer in the music industry, these units have not been used for 3 years but tested and working fine. You will need a scsi cable to link these 2 up, this will cost a couple of pounds only

This unit sounds fantastic even by todays standards and I believe these are still used by professionals worldwide. At the time they were industry standard and the best money could buy at about £4500 the pair!

The main unit has 2x 8meg boards in and the ex unit has 2x 2meg boards in. You could swap this round and have 10 meg in each unit or 18meg in one and 2 in another. 2 meg was enough for me in the expander unit as I just used it for my drums. ” Link

1 x AKAI S1100 EX Sampler Expander, 4 MB RAM (Bootmeldung: 2 MWords fitted), 8 Einzelouts, eingebautes Effektgerät, SCSI Kabel zum S1100, Netzkabel. Der EX ist ein vollwertiger S1100 Sampler nur ohne Bedienelemente. Er wird über SCSI vom Akai S1100 angesteuert.
Was die Teile können ist mit wenig Aufwand im WWW zu recherchieren. Sie waren mal der absolute Standard in der Studio-Samplertechnik.
Beide Geräte sind mit dem Betriebssystem V.1.31 geflasht und arbeiten zuverlässig. Das Display ist auch noch gut abzulesen. Allerdings ist beim Test vor dem Verkauf aufgefallen, dass das Diskettenlaufwerk des S1100 leider nicht mehr funktioniert. Das haben wir aber auch nie gebraucht, weil wir die Sampler über SCSI Laufwerke (z.B. Iomega ZIP100 etc.) und CD-Roms betrieben haben. Insofern also eher ein Schönheitsfehler, es sei denn, jemand will noch mit Floppy arbeiten. Dann wäre wohl ein neues Floppylaufwerk fällig, was ja nicht die Welt kostet.
Ausserdem mit dabei:
1 x 19 Zoll SYNTHAX SYNDRIVE mit SCSI “IOMEGA JAZ DRIVE 1 Gigabyte” und “CD-ROM”, SCSI Kabel
1 x IOMEGA ZIP100 Laufwerk mit Netzteil und 3 gebrauchte, formatierte ZIP100 Speicherdisks
2 x SyQuest EZFlyer 230 MB jeweils mit Netzteil
4 x Original CDs mit Sample-Sounds im Akai S1000 Format (auch für S1100)
Alle Geräte weisen mehr oder weniger alters- und anwendungsgerechte Gebrauchsspuren auf. Die Zugabegeräte sind ungeprüft – über die Funktionsfähigkeit kann ich leider nichts sagen. Das Floppy-Laufwerk des S1100 funktioniert nicht (siehe Beschreibung im Text weiter oben). Ich verkaufe also sämtliche aufgeführte Artikel dieser Auktion vorsichtshalber und ausdrücklich als defekt für Bastler! Bitte das zu beachten, damit später keine eventuellen Beschwerden kommen” Link

“I have decided to sell my Akai S1100 and S1100EX as I have not used them for a while. I bought them from PWL studios three or four years ago and they have only been used in my non smoking home since then. They are both fully expanded to 32Mb. The S1100 also has digital effects, digital input and output and SMPTE. I have the manuals for both the S1100 and the S1100 Expander and will include these along with a SCSI cable and MIDI cable to connect the two together. Upto six S1100EX’s can be connected to the S1100 at a time. I also bought a iomega SCSI zip drive but never got round to using it with the sampler but will include it in the auction.” Link

Beide Geräte waren bei uns stets im Rack untergebracht und haben das Studio nie verlassen. Die Folie des Display des S 1100 hat eine noch ca. 60% ige Leuchtkraft. Ab einem Auktionspreis von 500 € gebe ich noch eine neue, unverbaute Display-Folie mit dazu, die neu alleine 80 € kostet. Beide Geräte waren bei uns bereits längere Zeit nicht mehr im Einsatz, funktionierten aber bis zu ihrem letzten Einsatz tadellos. Ein gerade durchgeführter Testlauf verlief einwandfrei.” Link

These don’t turn up very often, but the S1100EX is an expansion piece which allows the user to add additional voices — it does not sample, but is similar to the S1000PB unit.

Very hard to find expansion boards for the S1000 or S1100 series samplers. At a minimum it’s at least 8MB of RAM, but according to the seller it could possibly be 20MB.
“Boards were found in storage. Not sure what size they are, it appears that two have manuals and are likely to 8mb each. CONDITION RATING – In excellent condition, one board looks like it has been modified or and capacitor has been added to it for unknown reason, see photo.” Link

Hard to find 8MB (4 MWORDS) expansion card for S1000 or S1100 sampler. Unlike newer samplers which use PC type DIMMs for RAM, Akai used to have these custom cards for their classic samplers and are very hard to find.

Not much info in the listing, however the S1100 has several expansion cards, so I would imagine there would be extra RAM in there as well. Comes with a S1100-EX which is a sample playback unit for the S1100 — you would stack these to for polyphony. It’s shame it’s on the other side of the pond, otherwise I’d snag this in a heartbeat!
