Akai MPC 4000 Demo/Prototype Unit?

Monday Dec 29, 2008

UK Seller says this is a prototype, but it may just be an early production unit. Seems as if some of the hardware functionality is not working correctly — this may or may not be fixable.

“VERY IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ: (This unit is almost certainly a prototype and hence 100% functionality can’t be guaranteed)

This is a very early demo unit (date 2002) from AKAI/Alesis R&D used by AKAI for promotional use and may well be a prototype! It has recently been fully expanded with a huge 272Mb RAM (nearly a half hour of sample time!!!), a 40Gb internal HD and a CDR/W burner. Although this unit is in excellent cosmetic condition (the control surface and display are superb) there are a few things of importance to note. Firstly, at some point the unit has been fully upgraded with the 8Ch output and digitial I/O options which have then been removed – as a result the blanking plates are missing – see rear panel photo. The contrast knob is missing too but the control is still usable. In terms of functionality the unit is functioning very well but not 100%, the display is fine, it samples, sequences, loads samples from CDROM, burns CDRs and the drum pads work fine. Both audio outputs and sample inputs are working. That said, I’ve been unable to make any of the on board FX work or the front or rear USB interfaces. The unit is currently running version 1.75a firmware. The unit’s internals are in superb clean condition – the lack of USB is unfortunate but I’ve no idea whether this is due to the unit being very early hardware or whether there is some form of fault. The unit has been run in the studio for hours and appears to be stable – I’ve not managed to make it crash in any way. Because of it’s slightly unknown state there is NO RESERVE on this auction.” Link
