Akai MPC 60 with Max RAM, OS3.10, SCSI

Wednesday Jul 14, 2010

“For sale is an Akai MPC60 MIDI Production Center. The unit is fully maxed out with all of the available options.

All pads, sliders, buttons, nobs, disk drive, inputs & outputs are fully-functional. You may have to press firmer on a few buttons but that is to be expected for a unit of this age.

The backlight is nice and bright as I replaced the EL backlight inverter a couple of months back. Unfortunately, as EL inverters go, this one emits a high-pitched whine that can be heard slightly through the sound output of the machine (when volume is maxed). It didn’t bother me a whole lot but when I wanted complete quiet when tracking beats I would just open the unit up and unplug the inverter. I was unable to find a way to isolate the inverter to avoid the whine. Besides, I enjoyed having a nice bright backlight (see the picture) so I didn’t mind the tradeoff.

I have thought long and hard about selling this unit as it was my first MPC (bought on Ebay in May 2004); however, I must sell it due to financial reasons (as with my MPC1000). Even as I write this I’m having second thoughts…

There is a good reason why the MPC60 is so revered in electronic music circles. I wouldn’t describe its sound as gritty, rather warm and full.

It’s amazing how inspiring it was to work on this machine. Though it only has 26.2 seconds of sample time and no filters, I was able to create some great stuff on it. Limitation truly spawns creativity.

Metal construction (built like a tank), smooth, silky pads, arm rest….it’s like a drum machine version of a Cadillac. They don’t build them like this anymore! Though I loved my MPC1000 (which I’m also selling) it didn’t hold a candle to the 60!

Though I’m sad to let it go, hopefully it can inspire someone else the way that it did for me while I worked with it.” Link
